Octomore 15.2 is a striking and elegant departure from its 15.1 sibling, offering whisky connoisseurs a deeper exploration of complexity through its unique cask maturation. Distilled from 100% Scottish barley and peated to an impressive 108.2 PPM, the 15.2 combines the smoky intensity of Octomore with layers of flavour drawn from its time in American oak, red wine, and French ex-Cognac casks. This carefully curated cask journey infuses the whisky with an intricate balance of richness, finesse, and unmistakable peat character.
Bottled at 57.9% ABV, Octomore 15.2 is both powerful and refined, a whisky that challenges perceptions while remaining undeniably graceful. With its nuanced character and intricate flavour profile, this expression is a must-try for those who appreciate the art of whisky-making at its most daring.
Tasting Note: On the nose, vibrant sweet citrus notes of lime and lemon meringue pie stand out, balanced by toasted oak and a hint of earthy smoke. Bright tropical fruit adds freshness, while deeper aromas of spices, smoked honey, and roasted coffee bring complexity. The palate is smooth and full-bodied, with vanilla custard, caramel, and toffee blending with a touch of black pepper and nutmeg, all wrapped in charred oak and Octomore's signature dry peat smoke. The Cognac cask finish adds a soft sweetness, deepening the flavour. Each sip lingers with a fresh, salty hint of the sea, reminiscent of Islay’s coastline, while the fading peat smoke leaves a long, satisfying finish. The mix of salt and smoke reflects the whisky's origins, with the oak and spice adding an elegant touch.
The Bruichladdich distillery on Islay is at the forefront of environmental action in Scotland's whisky industry. A recent project launched in 2021 aims to use sustainable energy to heat the distillery, creating only water as a waste product, eliminating all CO2 emissions.
Alongside their environmental credentials, Bruichladdich also proudly practices a very traditional approach to distilling that is fairly radical today. All their Single Malt Whiskies are based on Scottish Barley, with around half of that coming from Islay itself, and 5% organically grown.
Three whiskies in different styles are produced at Bruichladdich: The unpeated Bruichladdich bottles, the heavily peated Port Charlotte, and the ultra-heavily peated Octomore.
All Bruichladdich's whisky focus on terroir, quality, and careful cask maturation, with a degree of detail seen in few distilleries anywhere else in the world.
