Nose: Fresh, earthy, smoky and sooty, full of sweet peat, lime juice, coastal brine and oil of wintergreen.

Taste: Ashy, sooty and earthy; classic notes of liquorice root, cream, green olives and brine are all present, before being joined by preserved lemons and Chinese plum.

Finish: Earthy, rich and full, ending on smoked fish and lemon juice

About the distillery

Hidden away in a quiet cove overlooking the Sound of Islay from which its gaelic name derives, Caol Ila distillery is the largest on Islay, and to this day is prized by master blenders for it's elegant, light, gently smoky style.

The distillery was established in 1846 by Glasweigan businessman Hector Henderson, but went reconstruction a short time later in 1879, and further redevelopment in 1974 around the time of new ownership.

Part of the Diageo group today, Caol Ila's range of delicious Single Malt Islay Whiskies offer a coastal, floral, sweet, lightly smoky and medicinal style that makes for a great introduction to Islay whiskies.
